Sustainability Flashcards
What are the different BREEAM scores?
< 30 = Unclassified
> 30 = Pass
> 45 = Good
> 55 = Very good
> 70 = Excellent
> 85 = Outstanding
What are 4 different scoring methods of BREEAM?
1) Energy Consumption
2) Water
3) Waste
4) Transport
5) Materials
6) Pollution
What is sustainability?
Meets the needs of today without compromising the ability of future generations.
How can you measure sustainability?
The 3 pillars of sustainability:
- Social
- Economic
- Environmental
What are regulations regarding sustainability?
Part L - Conservation of fuel and power
What are some technologies available to help meet Part L?
- Green roofs
- Rainwater harvesting
- Ground source heat pumps
What are green roofs?
Roofs partially covered by ventilation.
What are ground source heat pumps?
Made from ground loops (a network of pipes buried underground) where liquid is pumped through the ground loops and absorbs the heat in the ground to transfer to heat pump.
What is rainwater harvesting?
Collecting rain from the roof (or other services) to pass through a filter and is pumped into the necessary places, some include:
- Flushing toilets
- Washing machines
- Washing vehicles
- Gardening / irrigation
What is meant by net zero carbon?
When the amount of carbon emissions associated with a buildings lifecycle (incl. construction) is offset through renewable energy.
