It received better pay and changes to the conditions of service, so supported the Tsar.
Why did the Tsar need the support of the army?
It could be used to put down revolutionary revolts in the cities and late run the countryside as well.
How was the Tsar’s opposition disunited?
Workers, peasants, liberal middle classes etc. did not combine to produce a united effort as effective opposition.
They had different aims and purposes, and did not work together.
What was the main purpose of the October Manifesto?
Split the liberals and the socialists.
How did the October Manifesto divide the revolutionaries?
Liberals wanted political reform and movement towards a constitutional democracy. so, they felt satisfied by the Manifesto and supported the Tsar.
Socialists wanted a social revolution.
Why did the middle classes fear violence and disorder?
They wanted the revolution to stop and a return to authority.
How did government repression benefit the Tsar?
Brutal measures beat the population into submission.
These methods were effective at re-establishing government control.
What did Witte do?
Secured a huge loan, largely from the French, in April 1906.
Why was the loan secured by Witte so essential?
Rescued the government from the financial trouble of 1905 after the war, which helped to stabilise the economy.
Paid for troops who were needed to put down uprisings and restore order.
