Why did Stalin want to increase military strength?

Stalin was increasingly convinced the USSR would be attacked.
Why did Stalin want to achieve self-sufficiency?
He wanted to made the USSR much less dependent on western manufactured goods.
To increase grain supplies.
He wanted to end the backwards agricultural system.
He did not want a state that was dependent on the productivity of the peasantry, so a bad harvest would no longer cause famine.
Why did Stalin want to move towards a socialist society?
The Marxist theory stated socialism could only be achieved when the majority of society were workers.
In 1928, only 20% of the USSRs population were workers.
Why did Stalin want to improve the standards of living?
Wanted to catch up to the West.
Industrialisation was designed to create wealth for society.
