Survey Methods. Sampling & Field Work (L5) Flashcards
What is a survey
represents a way of describing public opinion by collecting primary data through communicating directly with individual sampling units.
what is the criteria for evaluating survey methods
1) Task Factors - The nature of the task involved has an impact on the diversity of questions and flexibility, use of physical stimuli, sample control, quantity of data, and response rate.
2) Situational Factors - In any practical situation, the researcher has to balance the need to collect accurate and high-quality data with the budget and time constraints.
3) Respondent Factors - Since surveys are generally targeted at specific respondent groups, the respondent characteristics should also be considered while selecting a survey method.
What is a census
a complete enumeration of the elements of a population or study objectives
What is a sample
a sub-group of the elements of the population selected for participation in the study
What is the sampling design process
Define the target population, determine the sampling frame, select a sampling technique, determine the sample size, execute the sampling process
What are the 5 key survey methods
Telephone, Personal, Mail, Electronic and Mobile interviewing
Classify sampling techniques
Non Probability - Convenience, Judgmental, Quota & snowball sampling
Probability - Simple random, Systematic, Stratified, Cluster & other sampling techniques
What is the fieldwork process
Selection, Training, Supervision, Validation & Evaluation of fieldworkers
