Foucault - disciplinary societies
societies which do not use physical punishment, but control the mind through surveillance. This has led to disciplinary power has moved to other agencies other then the CJS e.g social workers, teachers
Mantheison - synoptic surveillance
Everyone is watching everyone else through the power of the media. For example, dashcams. This leads to more self surveillance.
Surveillance is effective for social control
- helps reduce fear of crime
- helps fight against terrorism
- provides evidence
Surveillance is not effective for social control
- limited evidence that it changes behaviour
- erosion of civil liberties and human rights
- oppressive form of social control (marxists)
