Left Realism Flashcards
Cause of crime
Unequal society, where gradual change is needed
Relative deprivation Lea and Young
Deprivation is the root cause of criminality. Living standards have risen so people feel deprived compared to others. This leads them to commit crime to get what they see themselves entitled to
Marginalisation
Groups that don’t feel part of society and lack the goals and organisations that represent them. This leads to crime as those groups may feel it will improve their situation
Subcultures - Cloward and Ohlin
Subcultures still subscribe to the goals and values of society such as materialism and consumerism, which they do not have the means to achieve
View on tackling crime
In order to tackle crime you must first tackle the social problems that lead to crime, specifically ones that lead to inequality and deprivation
EVAL
Doesn’t explain motives
Assumes value consensus
Relative deprivation cannot explain all crime
Focuses on utilitarian crime
