Surgical Knot Lab Images Flashcards
What knot can be seen here?
What knot can be seen here?
Surgeon’s knot
What knot can be seen here?
Half-hitch
A half hitch knot occurs when there is __________ tension on suture strands when ________ a knot or when _________
tension is applied to one strand.
uneven, tightening, upward
What knot can be seen here?
Granny knot
A granny knot occurs when second throw is tightened in the ____ direction
as the first throw. This leads to ________ knot security.
same, poor
List the General Principles of Knot Tying
1. Completed knot must be firm so slipping does not occur
2. Knot should be small, and ends should be as short as possible
* Prevents tissue reaction
3. Handle suture delicately when using instruments [avoid damaging suture]
4. Pull both suture strands [ears/arms] in opposite directions with even tension when
tightening
5. Avoid friction between strands [sawing]
6. Weakens suture integrity
Avoid excessive tension
* This can break the suture and cut tissues
7. Extra ties DO NOT add strength
* However, more throws are needed with larger sized suture
8. Avoid crimping suture with instruments
* Grab free end of the strand, ONLY during instrument ties
9. Minimum of 4 throws [2 knots]
1 hand ties are useful in ____ cavities and __________ spaces.
deep, confined
2 hand ties allow for good ________ and _______ to make a knot, but can
be difficult in ________ spaces.
control, accuracy, confined
