Surface Processes Quiz Flashcards
Weathering
breakdown of rock material (chemical or physical)
Chemical weathering
happens more in hot and wet environments
A chemical change results (example: carbonation/cave formation)
Physical weathering
the process that breaks rocks apart without changing their chemical composition.
rock abrasion
the process of scraping or wearing down by friction (water, other rocks, etc.)
some rocks are more resistant to weathering than others
Erosion
transport/movement of rock material
How quickly water flows in a stream is based on three factors:
gradient/slope
Volume of water (discharge)
Shape of stream channel/friction
Erosion in a stream happens on the
outside of the bend/meander
water is flowing faster
Streams can carry/move sediments in 4 ways
flotation, suspension, traction (bedload), solution (dissolved → salt water)
suspension transport
small particles held up within the water
traction transport
large boulders rolled at high flow
solution transport
rocks that have been dissolved into the water by weak acids
flotation transport
floating across the stream ig
Deposition
when weathered particles drop/settle
Deposition happens along the
inside of the meander
water/rivers/wind will sort sediments by
size
