what is the level of the sternal angle?
2nd rib, T4-T5
what is the thoracic level of the 1st rib?
T1
where can the middle lobe of the lung be auscultated anteriorly?
between the 4th and 6th ribs
how should you count ribs?
- find jugular notch
- go down to sternal angle
- this is level of 2nd rib
- count down from here
where is the right border of the heart?
extends just over 1cm on the RHS of the sternum, between the 3rd and 6th costal cartilages
where is the inferior border of the heart?
runs fro the 6th costal cartilage on the right to the 5th IC space on the LHS, mid-clavicular line
where is the superior border of the heart?
2nd costal cartilage on RHS just over 1cm from the sternum, to the 3rd CC on the LHS just over 1cm from the sternum
where is the left border of the heart?
2nd costal cartilage just over 1cm on the LHS of sternum, to the 5th IC space mid clavicualr line on LHS
where would you auscultate for the aortic valve?
right 2nd ICS, lateral to the sternal angle
LV to aorta
where would you auscultate for the pulmonary valve?
left 2nd ICS, lateral to the sternal angle
where would you auscultate for the tricuspid valve?
left 4th ICS lateral to the sternum
where would you auscultate for the mitral valve?
left 5th IC space mid clavicular line
where can you find the apex of the heart?
midclavicular line 5th IC space (same place as mitral valve)
what is the vertebral level of the iliac crests?
L4
what are the vertebral levels of the superior angle of the scapula, spine of the scapula, and the inferior angle of the scapula?
- superior angle of scapula = T2
- spine of scapula = T3
- inferior angle of scapula = T7
