surds Flashcards
what is the first two things we can do to a surd
- leave a line
- use our calculator to find the answer
what do we do if there is a coefficient in front of the surd
we leave the coefficient alone
what do we do once we have the answer from our calculator
we now will work backwards to fill in the line that we left opened
what do we do to fill in this open line
- we look at our answer and square the coefficient
- we then take the number in the surd and multiply it with the answer for our coefficient squared
- our multiplication sum must equal the original number inside the surd from the question
what do we do to the coefficients at the end
once they have the same surd we can now work them out in a sum
what do we do when we have an x and y
we do not use the calculator method.
we must break down each x and y value to either an exponent that can be squared or an exponent of 1
Use a number that can divide by two
what happens to an exponent inside of a surd
it divides by 2 in a square
and by 3 in a cube
