Equations Flashcards
1
Q
what two options do we have to solve a quadratic equation
A
- Factorize (brackets)
- Use the Quadratic Formula
2
Q
where can i find a,b and c on a quadratic equation
A
a = the number in front of the x
b = all the variables labelled b
c = the last number in the equation
3
Q
how do we work out the sum with a + or - square root
A
we first work out the plus root
then we work out the negative root
4
Q
what do we do when we see an x^2
A
we must take everything to one side of the equation and make everything equal to 0
5
Q
what format must i always remember when putting on my values
A
always use brackets
6
Q
what do we do if there is no c - value
A
c will equal 0
7
Q
what is completing a square
A
our third way to solve quadratic equations
8
Q
what are the steps to completing a square
A
- move the number that does not have an x to the right
- write our sum on the left the same way
- then add a new sum by from the second x (b) over two, squared
- now add the exact same sum to the right side (we will be left with two of the same sum)
- we will now open two brackets and place the x and the new sum inside it (we must also add a square)
- type in the sum on the right in our calculator and right the answer on the right side (keep it in a fraction)
- no we can add a square root on the left side to eliminate the square (must do this to both sides)
- we will now have a plus or minus for our sum on the right hand side and must bring over any sum value without an x to the right hand side
- now solve for x by doing an equation for plus and another equation for minus
- we will be left with two values for x
