Support types Flashcards
What are supports and what are the 3 different types?
Supports are special types of connections between a structure and the foundation/ground
there are three main types:
- roller pin
- fixed pin
- encastre (clamped)
These support types are used in different combinations to ensure a structure has the required resistance against movement
How many dofs does a roller take away?
A roller takes away 1 dof
If fixed the horizontal translations but not the vertical translation or rotation
How many dof does a fixed pin take away?
A fixed pin removes 2 dof
-> it removes the translational
How many dofs does an encastre (clamped) pin take away?
An encastre support removed three dof. If it fixes the translations and the rotation.
What are roller pins?
This roller pin fixes the vertical translation but not the horizontal translation but not the rotation
What is a fixed pin?
These allow for rotation, but fix the body horizontally and vertically. Hinges are good examples of this kind of support
What is an encastre (clamped) pin?
What are the different ways to fix a single body?
