SUPPORT STAFF IN MANAGING CHALLENGING BEHAVIOURS Flashcards
I consistently model a Culture of Consistency to achieve an orderly and safe learning environment within my own classroom. I ensure that I am in a position to give staff my full attention
to first ensure productive conversation where the staff member feels heard and respected.
Using my restorative justice approach…
I ask guiding questions such as: What happened? What were you thinking at the time? What have you thought about since? Who has been affected by what you have done? In what way?
If the same thing happens again, what would you do differently?
I lead staff members to…
use information in students’ Individual Education Plans (IEP) and Personalised Learning Plans (PLP), and Behaviour Support Plans to inform their teaching practice and make necessary adjustments within the classroom.
I would then engage staff member in PL to support their practice.
Utilising the best practice framework, I support and mentor staff to restore harm, using data proven strategies to manage challenging behaviours in the classroom, thus facilitating a productive learning environment.
I would continue to work closely with this staff member…
Mentoring them in de-escalating behaviour strategies, implementing observations (inviting them to my class, as well as attend a number of lessons moving forward to make sure the teacher is comfortable and feels safe). I would continue to build their skills to manage the class.
I encourage productive dialogues between teachers and students and their students parents…
As such, students are able to receive continual support, both within and outside of school. By ensuring that any behavioural, welfare or academic issues are dealt with efficiently and promptly, students are supported through a cohesive and consistent network.
I am confident in my growth and professionalism as a classroom practitioner. I know at MHS, one of the goals for Strategic Direction 2 is to promote positive classroom environments…As Head Teacher of English…
I will ensure my colleagues are supported throughout all aspects of classroom teaching: from understanding course content, delivering engaging and relevant teaching and learning programs, and managing challenging behaviours.
