What PERSONAL and PROFESSIONAL CHARACTERISTICS do you possess that will make you a successful leader in our school?

Why me?
My confident and passionate demeanor:

I am confident and passionate about my role here at Melville. But I am also just confident and passionate as a person, and what drives me, what motivates me, is inspiring the same confidence and passion in others.

This is evidenced by…

A

Most recently I led the English faculty in a pilot mark. I used my experience coordinating equitable marking procedures, underpinned by NESA processes for awarding grades, to model best practice in determining student’s achievement of learning outcomes. I disseminated important information concerning the Common Grade Scale, and led discussion around refining summative assessment success criteria to utilise more student friendly language; AND, the implementation of more formative assessment opportunities. I led the staff to support retaining student work samples, engaging in meaningful dialogue to encourage and support the faculty in future collaboration/marking pilots to achieve a greater focus on quality teaching practices and equitable and consistent marking procedures. It was through my confidence and passion as a natural leader that I was able to inspire confidence in staff members within our faculty - in particular, one of our younger English teachers felt supported in facilitating our next marking pilot (which was only this week). Using the learn - do - reflect model, this teacher confidently set benchmarks using the Common Grade Scale and later, when we reflected on the pilot mark, expressed her increase in confidence for speaking up during these meetings.

A

I know at MHS, one of the milestones for Strategic Direction 1 is to… promote consistent and comparable judgement of student learning, monitor student learning progress, and identify skill gaps for improvement and areas for extension. As HT English, I will continue to LEAD the English faculty in coordinating equitable marking procedures, as well as build teacher capacity to review assessment data and implement change and adjustment to improve student outcomes.
