My charismatic, positive and approachable demeanour allows me to:

Connect and form relationships - built on a foundation of empathy and respect - makes me someone that people come to when they need support, or guidance. In the short time that I’ve been here I have cultivated close working relationships, as well as friendships with various staff members throughout all parts of the school community. It is through these relationships that I am able to build confidence in others, as well as inspire self-efficacy.

An example where I have used my charisma, as well as my positive and approachable demeanour to lead staff, in addition to the recent marking pilot, is through providing guidance and prepping another staff member for an upcoming interview - much like my own. I feel extremely grateful that I am surrounded by such supportive staff, that want me to succeed. I am passionate about paying that forward. I am equally grateful that this staff member felt like they could continue to approach me for additional support, and that they felt safe and confident that ego is left at the door, and that we’re all learning. For me, this really comes back to creating authentic relationships, built on a foundation of empathy and respect. What a nice link back to my teaching philosophy ;)

My charismatic and approachable demeanor also allows me to build my relationships with my students: no significant learning can occur without significant relationships. By creating a safe and non-threatening environment, underpinned by a culture of consistency, students feel comfortable to be themselves, and that they have space to confront challenges, academically, socially, and emotionally, and to see failure as an opportunity for growth.

This is evidenced by Sentral attendance data - 82% of my Year 8 class has improved attendance from comparing data from term 3 to term 4, with several students’ attendance increasing by 30%. This has had a direct impact on students completing assessment tasks. Some students initially reported that they didn’t care, however, later approached me in the playground with a completed draft. It is due to my charismatic, encouraging, and approachable demeanor that students felt safe to overcome shame, and demonstrate resilience in completing the task. SLSO’s Ash and Karen both reported that, in their observations of other classes (in this cohort) - students were reluctant to start.

I know at MHS, one goal for Strategic Direction 2 is to… build resilience and a sense of belonging for students and staff, based on restorative practices and circle conversations… I am confident that I will continue to build my faculty up to achieve these goals.
