A

Lots of work has supported EU and USA policies such as Africa receiving loans in return for cutting back on healthcare and education spending.

A

Rich elite controlled, mainly male government officials, celebrities or CEO’s.
Used as an opportunity to make agreements and network.
International decision making supports those in power. Promotes global links discussing terrorism, social and economic policy.

A

A

Russia have used their VETO 127 times (more than any other), mainly to prevent actions against Syria whose growth they support.
USA has used their veto to stop intervention in Israel, USA has a large Jewish population who support the growth of Israel over Palestine.

How does the UN International Court of Justice relate to superpower status?

A

ICJ settles disputes between UN member countries and advises on international law, decisions are considered binding.
Five permanent countries (China, Russia, UK, USA and France) have more influence over international decision making, exert their sphere of influence and express political goals.
Limited in power as countries sometimes overrule decisions e.g Israel refusing the remove their boundary wall inside Palestinian territory.

A

USA applied sanction in 1995
UN sanctions began in 2006, banning weapon imports and freezing assets.
Irans economic decline persuaded them to agree to stop their nuclear program in 2015 and sanctions were ended in 2016.

A

Since the end of the cold war its influence has diminished, fears it is too expensive with little benefit.
Power is rising again as Russia military is becoming larger in Ukraine. 2016 troops were based in Poland and three Baltic states.
Only 3 countries pay their 2% GDP on their military budget, the USA spends the most 690 billion.

Co-operate on military action in the Pacific Ocean.

Acts as a free trade zone, allowing the free movement of capital, commodities and people.
Supports members economic growth, environmental concerns and human rights.
Tension is increasing after 2016 when UK voted to leave, tension over greater convergence of independence.
