What is superficial thrombophlebitis?
A
Results from thrombus formation in superficial veins (saphenous vein and tributaries in lower limb)

What are the risk factors for superficial thrombophlebitis?
A
- Varicose veins
- Thrombophilia
- IV cannula or drug administration
- Pregnancy
- Cancer
- Previous Hx

What is the presentation of superficial thrombophlebitis?
A
- Pain
- Tenderness
- Itching
- reddening of skin
- Hardening of surrounding tissue
- Pigmentation changes of overlying skin

What is the prognosis of superficial thrombophlebitis?
A
- Uncomplicated usually benign and self limiting, symptoms subside in 1-2weeks
- high likelihood of recurrence is varicose veins

What is the management of superficial thrombophlebitis?
A
- If serious underlying cause (cancer) referral to specialist
- Manage pain: paracetamol/NSAIDs
- Self care advice: warm moist towel to area, avoid immobility, elevate leg when sitting
- Compression stocking (after excluding arterial insufficiency)
- Screen for coag disorder
