AAA Flashcards
What are abdominal aorta aneurysms? What types?
- Enlargement of the aortic artery caused by a weakness in the arterial wall
- Can be true or false
- True involve all 3 layes
What are the causes/risk factors of AAA?
Risk factors: >Male >FHx >Hypertension >Diabetes >Smokers
Connective tissues diseases
>Marfans
What is the presentation of AAA?
- Usually asymptomatic
* often incidental finding
What is the presentation of a rupture AAA?
Signs
- Hypotensive
- Tachycardia
Symptoms
- Acute onset
- Syncope
- Confusion
- Abdo pain acute onset
- Back pain/loin pain
- Vomiting
What is the management of a AAA that has not ruptured?
*USS screening months until >5.5cm
What factors create a low rupture risk?
- Asymptomatic
- Aortic diameter <5.5cm
- Optimise cardiovascular risk
Aortic width size <3cm on USS means? Action?
Normal -no further action
Aortic width size 3 - 4.4cm on USS means? Action?
Small aneurysm
Rescan every 12months
Aortic width size 4.5 - 5.4cm on USS means? Action?
Medium aneurysm
Rescan every 3 months
Aortic width size >5.5cm on USS means? Action?
Large aneurysm
Refer within 2 weeks to vascular surgery for intervention
What factors make up a high rupture risk?
- Symptomatic
* aortic diameter >5.5cm
When a AAA is over 5.5cm what surgical treatments are there?
- Elective endovascular repair
* Open repair if unsuitable for endovacular repair
