Superficial Face Flashcards
What are the layers of the scalp?
Skin
Connective tissue
Aponeurosis
Loose connective tissue
Pericranium
What are the contents of the anterior fossa?
•Cribiform plate
•Olfactory bulb and olfactory nerves
•Foramen cecum
•Usually sealed in adults (passage of vein from nasal cavity to sup. sagittal sinus)
•Anterior ethmoidal foramen
•Anterior ethmoidal artery, vein and nerve
•Posterior ethmoidal foramen
•Posterior ethmoidal artery, vein and nerve
What are the contents of the middle fossa?
•Cribiform plate
•Olfactory bulb and olfactory nerves
•Foramen cecum
•Usually sealed in adults (passage of vein from nasal cavity to sup. sagittal sinus)
•Anterior ethmoidal foramen
•Anterior ethmoidal artery, vein and nerve
•Posterior ethmoidal foramen
•Posterior ethmoidal artery, vein and nerve
What are the contents of the posterior fossa?
•Cribiform plate
•Olfactory bulb and olfactory nerves
•Foramen cecum
•Usually sealed in adults (passage of vein from nasal cavity to sup. sagittal sinus)
•Anterior ethmoidal foramen
•Anterior ethmoidal artery, vein and nerve
•Posterior ethmoidal foramen
•Posterior ethmoidal artery, vein and nerve
What are the branches of the facial nerve?
Mixed nerve
•Motor – muscles of facial expression, post. belly of digastric, stylohyoid and stapedius
•General sensory – skin over the ear
•Special sensory – taste
•Parasympathetic – salivary glands and lacrimal glands
What is the course of the facial nerve?
•Exits between the pons and medulla as a large motor root and a smaller sensory root
•Both roots enter the internal acoustic meatus with the vestibulocochlear nerve
•Travels through the petrous portion
•Exits through the stylomastoid foramen
•Gives three motor branches before piercing the parotid gland
•Pierces parotid gland and terminates into five branches
What is the blood supply to the superficial face?
