Sundarbarns Risks + Opportunities Flashcards
Growing population
more fuel and farmland is needed, so mangroves are being removed. Between 2000 and 2020, 110 km2 of mangroves disappeared.
Mangroves as flood defence
30 trees per 0.01 hectares can reduce the destructive force of a tsunami or cyclone by up to 90%.
Animal attacks
tigers- increased population / need for food is leading to increased usage of the tigers’ habitat. Tigers killed 22 people every year between 1935 and 2006.
Why is there a lack of freshwater ?
water is diverted from rivers for irrigation and agricultural use
Mangroves mitigating climate change
They also absorb carbon dioxide, mitigating climate change
Cyclones in area
there have been 13 supercyclones in the past 23 years.
Negative impact of flooding
Flooding can lead to salinisation making it hard to grow crops. Soil salinity increased six times between 1984 and 2014
What do the delta/ mangroves provide?
Rich ecosystem of mangroves provides the local population with fish, crabs, honey and nipa palm leaves for roofing and basket making
Difficult access impacts
Access is difficult with few roads, many of which are poor quality. Its difficult for residents to receive goods, healthcare and education
Mangrove tree resources
Mangroves provide timber for construction, firewood and furniture
Rising sea levels impacts
Low-lying land is at risk from rising sea levels. They are rising 2x as fast as the global average (3cm/year over the past 20 years), and the area has lost ~12% of its shoreline in the last 40 years.
How many houses have electricity
20%
