Women - leg
Men - trunk especially on back
What is basal cell carcinoma (non melanoma) skin cancer?
- Affects more men than women - early sun exposure
- Affects poor tanners
- May be locally invasive
- Surgery or radiotherapy
- Excellent prognosis
- Follow up important
What is squamous cell carcinoma (non-melanoma) skin cancer?
- Occurs more in older people
- Long exposure to sunlight
- Often on sun damaged skin
- UV radiation - large part
Who is at risk for malignant melanoma?
- Adults with many melanocyte naevi (moles)
- Adults who freckle easily
- Adults with unusual moles
- Adults with an early history of sunburn
- Family history
Occurs in epidermal melanocytes
What are the major features of the lesions?
- Change in size
- Irregular shape
- Irregular colour
What are the minor features of the lesion?
- Largest diameter 7mm or more
- Inflammation
- Oozing
- Change in sensation
What is the ABCDE checklist?
A - asymmetry
B - border - blurry or jagged edges
C - colour - mole that has more than one colour
D - diameter - moles with diameter greater than 6mm
E - evolution - gone through sudden changes in size, shape or colour
