What is scabies?
A
A parasitic infection by scarcoptes scabiei

How is scabies transmitted?
A
By close personal contact and rarely by bedding and clothing

How does scabies infect?
A
Female mute burrows into skin, lays eggs then dies - allergic reaction to eggs and faeces after 2-6 weeks
Eggs hatch and cycle begins again

What are the symptoms of scabies?
A
- Persistent itchy skin eruption
- Small erythematous papules
- Pruritis - worse at night and after bathing
- Finger webs, hands, wrists, elbows and ankles affected
- Pruritis can persist for several weeks after manifestation has been eliminated
- Can get eczema or secondary bacterial infection

What is crusted scabies?
A
- Occurs in people with an impaired IS
- Hyperkeratotic, crusted lesions are usually seen on hands, feet, nails, scalp and ears
- Crusted scabies may not cause itching but is highly contagious
