1903 - What did Emmeline Pankhurst do?

A

Took fight to the streets. She set up the WSPU (suffragettes) and disagreed with Milicent Fawcett on protesting methods. Prefered militant actions and saw herself as a militant general.

A

Was born in Manchester and saw how it was mostly built for men. Decided to campaign for women very young, as a teen. Women were legally disadvantaged.

A

arrested for burning postboxes. Also hid in HOC to get residency there. In 1913 she was killed by horse. Public sympathy was granted.

Threw leaflets from hot air baloons after chaining herself to ladies’ gallery in 1908. Government deemed her a genius.

A

New PM David Lloyd George was sympathetic. Act got 55 against and 385 for. Act gave women over 30 the right to vote.
