Suffering Servant Flashcards
Where in the OT is Jesus referred to as the Suffering Servant?
In Isaiah, there are four songs that refer to the Servant of the Lord.
“He poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors” Isaiah 53:12
“… my righteous servant will justify many, he will bear their iniquities” Isaiah 53:11
What in the NT refers Jesus to being the Suffering Servant?
- Jesus says that he is the one to fulfil the prophecy from Isaiah 53:12 “And he was numbered with the transgressors” In Luke 22:37
- Mark 10:45 states that the Son of Man “did not come to be served, but to serve and give his life as ransom” linking Son of Man (Jesus) with the Servant
What is F.F. Bruce’s view on this?
He argues that there has been a merging of concepts of interpretations of the role of the Servant and says that the prophecies from Isaiah were connected with the faithful remnant of Israel
What is Hooker’s perspective?
She questions whether Jesus viewed his own suffering through the way it was portrayed in the suffering servant motif of Isaiah. She argues whether the predictions of the passion of Christ were placed in Jesus’ mouth by the early church
