What is the difference between SUDI and SIDS?

A

SUDI requires further investigation: many will have diagnosis identified.
SIDS is the “Unexplained SUDI”

What is the general definition of SIDS?

A

Sudden unexpected death of an infant less than 1y, with onset of fatal episode apparently occurring during sleep that remains unexplained after thorough investigation, including complete autopsy and review of circumstances of death.

Pathophysiogloy of SUDI?

A

Unknown BUT a/w:

  • Tummy/side sleeping
  • Co sleeping
  • No loose blankets in bed
  • Overheated / stuffy rooms
  • Smoking in room with baby

How may SIDS be minimised?

A

• Sleep babies on their backs
• Use a firm sleep surface such as a mattress in a safety approved crib, covered by fitted sheet
• Room sharing
• Minimise soft objects, toys, crib bumpers, loose bedding
• Do not smoke
• Breast feeding
Do not overheat
