A
Deaths which remain unexplained after a post-mortem.
- Peak age 2-4m - 90% <6m old
- Most common cause of death in 1m-1yo

What are the risk factors for SIDS?

- FRONT-SLEEPING BABY
- Prematurity
- LBW
- Male
- Maternal smoking
- Microenvironment
- Pillow
- Duvet
- Heat

How can SIDS be prevented?
A

Sleep Positioning/Wrapping
- Supine sleep position (back for first 6 months) – “Back to Sleep” Campaign
- Increased chance of flattened occiput
- Ameliorate with supervised “tummy time” - prone time when awake
- Avoid overheating baby → no heavy wrapping or high room temperature
- “Feet to foot” position in cot
- Supine sleep position (back for first 6 months) – “Back to Sleep” Campaign
- Support – Lullaby Trust
- General advice:
- Share a room with your baby for first 6m (cot in room)
- Never sleep on a sofa or armchair with baby
- Do not co-sleep
- Breastfeed baby if possible
- Smoke free – during pregnancy and after birth
