SUD 6 Flashcards
What is the advantage of Buprenorphine/Naloxone combination?
Buprenorphine is absorbed when administered sublingually, but not Naloxone.
Prevents diversion and injection bc Naloxone becomes active when injected.
What is a “buzzword” withdrawal symptom of BZD of Etoh?
Sensitivity to light
others include, insomnia, increased anxiety, autonomic hyperactivity, nausea, HA, hallucinations and seizures
What medication can reverse BZD overdose?
Flumazenil
What is the syndrome of marijuana withdrawal?
- Irritability, anger or aggression
- Anxiety
- Insomnia, disturbing dreams
- Decreased appetite
- Restlessness
- Depressed mood
- Physical symptoms (abdominal pain, sweating, fever, chills, HA)
Marijuana’s effect depends on where in the brain it binds…
What affects are caused by THC binding to…
- Neocortex
- Basal Ganglia
- Nucleus Accumbens
- Hypothalamus
- Amygdala
- Hippocampus
- Brain stem
- Spinal Cord
- Cerebellum
- Neocortex = altered judgment
- Basal Ganglia = slowed reaction time
- Nucleus Accumbens = euphoria
- Hypothalamus = increased appetite
- Amygdala = Psychosis/paranoia
- Hippocampus = Impaired memory
- Brain stem = anti-nausea
- Spinal cord = pain modulation
- Cerebellum = incoordination
Imaging studies have shown that adolescent brains exposed chronically to THC causes what?
- Alter the development of connectome (map of neural connections)
- Decrease white matter in brain.
Which area of the brain the marijuana act on to cause problems with memory formation and retrieval?
HIPPOCAMPUS
Studies show that those who develop marijuana dependence before 18 years old showed how many point IQ drop as an adult?
Is IQ lowered if MJ used in adulthood?
8 points.
NO IQ drop when used after becoming adult.
Studies show that adolescents who smoke MJ scored worse on attention, verbal learning, memory and processing speed. Does this deficit continue even when they are NOT high?
YES, these deficits continued even when NOT actively high.
What are Anandamides and how does it relate to Marijuana?
Anandamides are the bodies “endocannabinoids” which act to keep neuronal activity in balance (between hypo and hyper activity).
Anandamide are chemically very similar to THC. So if you smoke MJ the THC binds Anamdamid receptors and prevent the fine tune balance that it regulates…BUT rather THC comes in like a sledge hammer and screws up the balance.
