A

A movement of people and services away from the inner city to the edge of built up areas. It is also known as urban sprawl.

Describe urban sprawl in Mumbai, India.

A

There is a fast population growth because birth rate is high due to lack of contraception.
Rural to urban migration - poor quality of life and famine in rural areas so people move to the city for employment and a better quality of life.
Poor income earners - infill on sides of main roads.

A

London consists of rich and middle class people.
Roads - linear development - increase in car ownership.
Decentralisation of goods and services.
The inner city is over crowded with deprivation, pollution and congestion.
Larger houses in the suburbs, more green space and a wealthier environment.
Increase in footloose industries - people can work from home.

How does London manage urban sprawl?

A

The introduction of the greenbelt in 1940’s.
Areas of open space and low density land use around urban areas are strictly controlled.
London is limited to 5133km^3.
It is predicted that the UK’s populations could reach 70 million by 2033.
The government aims to build 240,000 houses a year to prevent house shortages and stabilise house prices.
Greenfield and brownfield sites are used to do this.

What are the advantages of greenfield sites?

A

No costs to remove past constructions.
Existing road networks are not in place so there are not restrictions.
Often on the edge of cities - land is cheaper.
Planners and architects have a blank canvas to work with.
More space is available for gardens.
Being on the edge of cities/countryside can appeal to buyers.
Sites on the edge of cities are often close to motorways.

What are the advantages of brownfield sites?

A

They are more sustainable.
It stops the city expanding and reduces travel time.
Road, gas and electrical networks already exist.
Easier to gain planning permission.
Sites are closer to the city for shopping and job accessibility.
