Wernicke’s Encephalopathy
Thiamine deficiency; confusion, loss of muscle coordination and vision changes
Korsakoff’s Syndrome
Retrograde and anterotrograde amnesia and confabulation (attempts to compensate for memory loss by fabricating memories); hallucinations
Remission
Specifiers used only after NO criteria for disorder except cravings met for at least 3 months
Early Full Remission: 3-12 mo
Sustained Full Remission: 12 mo+
Family Roles
Hero - very successful and popular
Scapegoat - Rejects family system and is often in trouble
Lost Child - often youngest
Enabler - Does everything possible to make alcoholic person stop drinking, except what might actually work: confronting the person or leaving
Mascot - Youngest child and plays clown to relieve tension
