Research Flashcards
RCT
Random assignments to intervention or control. Generally not used in social work b/c unethical for control
Quasi-Experimental Design
Void of randomization of either subjects or treatment and/or the lack of comparison groups. Still an attempt to isolate the tx. E.g., does tx have an impact
Single Subject Design
Subject serves as own control rather than using another individual or group.
Retrospective Design
Asked to look back and remember what like at earlier time point
Cross-sectional Design
Collect data at a single point in time from participants of different ages.
Longitudinal Design
Same people measured at different ages
Cross-Sequential Design
Combo of cross-sectional and longitudinal.
Validity
The degree to which the tool measures what it claims to measure
Internal Validity: The confidence that can be placed in the cause-and-effect relationship in a study
External Validity: The extent to which an effect in research can be generalized
Concurrent Validity: The extent to which the results of a particular test, or measurement, correspond to those of a previously established measurement for the same construct
Predictive Validity: Involves testing a group of subjects for a certain construct, and then comparing them with results obtained at some point in the future.
Reliability
The overall consistency of a measure. Higher reliability indicates a measure will produce statistically similar results under consistent experimental conditions (e.g., 2 different social workers administer same interview, do they get same results)
Qualitative Research
Systematic investigations that include inductive, in-depth, studies of individuals, groups, organizations, or communities; focuses on the why and how of decision making to better understand human behavior
Construct Validity
The degree to which an instrument measures the characteristic being investigated
Quantitative Research
Systematic investigations that include descriptive or inferential statistical analysis
Null Hypothesis
A statement that no relationship exists between study variables
