a primary progressive biochemical, psychosocial, genetically transmitted disease of relapse whose hallmarks are denial, loss of control and unmanageability
The repetitive, compulsive use of a substance despite negative consequences to the user. The term “dependence” is replacing the word addiction in the official nomenclature.
addition
addiction exerts a long and powerful influence on the brain that manifest in 3 distinct ways:
- craving for the object of addition
- loss of control over its use
- and continuing involvement with it despite
term used to refer to the behavioral patterns of family members who have been significantly affected by another family members substance abuse or addition
codependency
a person who facilitates the abusers addictive behavior
enabler
significant others doing things that inadvertently support rather than discourage the addicted persons habit
enabling
the occurrence of 2 or more psychiatric disorders in a single patient at one time
co-morbidity
