Typically refers to a more severe substance use disorder that is characterized by having more symptoms, tolerance and withdrawal, by using more of the substance than intended by trying unsuccessfully to stop, by having physical or psychological problems made worse by the drug
ADDICTION
- larger doses of the substance being needed to produce the desired effect
- effects of the drug becoming markedly less if the usual amount is taken
TOLERANCE
- negative physical and psychological effects that develop when a person stops taking a substance or reduces the amount (muscle pains, twitching, sweats, insomnia, vomiting, diarrhea)
WITHDRAWAL
- people who have been drinking heavily for years experience this when the alcohol in the blood drops suddenly
- person becomes delirious as well as tremulous and has hallucinations
DELIRIUM TREMENS
- alcohol use disorder is often part of this
- abusing more than one drug at a time
POLYDRUG ABUSE
- leading cause of intellectual development disorder among children
- fetus growth is slowed, cranial, facial, limb anomalies
- can be caused even by moderate drinking
