Subluxation vs. Compensation Flashcards
What might offset femur height other than subluxation?
- anatomically short leg
- knee/ankle injury
- previous fracture
If there is a wedged disc below a level vertebra, is it most likely to be a subluxation or compensation?
compensation
If there is a wedged disc above a level vertebra, is it most likely to be a subluxation or compensation?
Subluxation
how often is atlas compensatory?
82%
Why are compensatory vertebra moveable?
Because their nuclei are intact
How will occiput compensate for an anatomic deficient leg?
Condyle will be elevated on side of short leg
What do taut and tender fibers typically indicate?
Possible compensation
What do lax fibers typically indicate?
Possible Subluxation
Why is compensation so prevalent in the cervical spine?
- Because cervical spine adapts to subluxations outside the cervical area
- tend to occur in higher cervical segments
- atlas more than occiput
What direction does compensation occur in?
- Anteriorly, for a posterior subluxation
- to maintain body balance
Can compensation become subluxation?
- YES
- a simple misalignment can become a subluxation dependin on the type of force that’s put into the body
How do most cervical subluxation occur?
- head being driven forward
- mechanically–>when hyperflexed, verteral bodies close at the anterior margin
- the forces transmitted through segments drives the vertebrae post./inf.
How could atlas be responsible for subluxation below?
- by causing cord pressure, affecting Gamma efferent motor fibers
- Causing paravertebral muscle contraction via stretch mechanism
- the atlas would have to be corrected to clear the cord pressure, allowing::: muscles to relax, correction of other subluxations
What causes subluxation in upper cervical and sacroiliac regions?
- damage to interarticular ligaments due to osseous misalignment
- causing the casular ligament to swell: Producing nerve pressure
- Inflammation reaction occurs:: resulting in altered metabolic rate & heat of a nerve, Head detectible on skin surface
WHy can a vertebra not subluxate anteriorly?
Because of the superior articular facets
How much force is required to subluxate?
Minor force:
- Sneeze
- Stepping off the curb the wrong way
Where does subluxation occur in the vertebrae?
DISC!!!
What allows for inferiority of vertebra?
- As the vertebra slips backward, it pushes the nucleus forwards
- allowing posterior part of vertebra to drop inferiorly
How are the bodies of C5-L5 rotated when the sacrum has gone posterior?
They rotate to the side of the posterior rotated sacrum
WHen the ilium subluxates, what causes the ilium to stay in that direction?
Edema
What are the 3 components of a subluxation?
- Fixation
- Edema
- Nerve impingement: causing physiological and pathological conditions
Each subluxation results in________
compensation
