Nerves Flashcards
How does atlas compress nerve fibers, vagus nerve, and SCG?
- Nerve–protrusion of the articular capsule
- Vagus–anterior rotation of C1TVP puts pressure on carotid sheath
- SCG–when C1 TVP rotates anterior
Through the parasympathetic, how can atlas “cause” nerve pressure below?
- PSNS pressure can cause a hypersecretion of various endocrine glands: such as thyroid, adrenals, sex hormones, and others
- when this happens, synovial membranes & bursae become inflamed & swollen
- May cause the disc to be edematous and protrude
- Causing compression of adjacent spinal nerves
For atlas/occiput, where will nerve pressure be found?
- Atlas– between atlas and axis
- Occiput–between occiput and atlas
What are the neural fibers compressed by atlas subluxation?
- Spinal nerves C1 & C2
- Vagus nerve (CN X)
- Superior Cervical Ganglion (SCG)->C1-C3
- Hypoglossal Nerve (CN XII)
- Spinal Accessory Nerve (CN XI)
- Spinal Cord
What are the types of Nerves?
- Somatic afferent
- Somatic efferent
- Visceral afferent
- SNS
- PSNS
What are the 9 functions of a nerve?
- Motor
- Calorific
- Sensory
- Secretory
- Excretory
- Reproductive
- Resparatory/Respiratory
- Nutritive
What is the status of the nerve in a chronic subluxation ?
- With time, the nerve is able to adapt to the extra stimulus: raising the threshold to cause a decrease in action potentials
- The nerve fires LESS than normal
- Causing decrease in metabolism resulting in pitting edema
What component plays a major role in the impingement of the spinal nerve?
Swelling of the disc
What component plays a minor role in the impingement of the spinal nerve?
Narrowing of the IVF
How can the 2nd spinal nerve not be compressed?
When atlas rotation is the major component of the subluxation
Why is nerve pressure different with atlas subluxation?
- Because there is no disc
- Pressure comes from capsular ligament
What side will nerve pressure be on with an atlas subluxation?
The side of atlas laterality
