subclavian artery Flashcards
where do subclavian arteries start
posterior to sternoclavicular joint
when do subclavian arteries change and what to
change into maxillary arteries after passing over lateral margins of rib 1
where are the 3 parts of subclavian artery in relation to the anterior scalene muscle
1st part - medial
2nd part - posterior
3rd part - lateral
what branches come off first part of subclavian artery
vertebral artery
thyrocervical trunk
internal thoracic artery
what happens with vertebral artery
it ascends and exits foramen transversarium and joins with other vertebral artery to become basilar artery
what happens with thyrocervical trunk
it ascends to give off the inferior thyroid artery (to thyroid and gives off ascending cervical artery to prevertebral muscles and spinal cord)
it also gives off transverse cervical artery (anterior to anterior scalene & gives superficial branch to trapezius & deep branch to rhomboids & scapula)
it also gives off suprascapular artery (anterior to anterior scalene, supplies supraspinatus fossa)
what does inferior thyroid artery supply
larynx, trachea, oesophagus, thyroid & parathyroid glands & adjacent muscles
what are terminal branches of thyrocervical trunk
inferior thyroid artery
ascending cervical trunk
what happens with internal thoracic artery
descends inferomedially posterior to the clavicle into the thoracic cavity to the 6th intercostal space & gives rise to anterior intercostal arteries that supply the intercostal spaces
what branch comes off the second part of subclavian artery
costocervical trunk
what happens with costocervical trunk
it ascends poteromedially and divides into supreme intercostal artery and deep cervical artery (ascends superiorly to back of neck to supply deep cervical muscles & to anastomose with occipital artery from ECA)
what branch comes off 3rd part of subclavian artery
dorsal scapular artery
where does subclavian vein lie
its a continuation of axillary vein and begins at lateral border of first rib. runs parallel and anterior to subclavian artery and anterior to anterior scalene
