Infratemporal Fossa Flashcards
infratemporal fossa contents
-inferior part of temporalis
- lateral and medial pterygoid muscles
- maxillary artery and branches
-mandibular nerve and branches (IAN,buccal,lingual)
-inferior alveolar nerve and artery (branch of CNV3 and maxillary artery)
- chorda tympani nerve
-otic ganglion
-pterygoid venous plexus
posterior trunk of CN V3 branches
- auriculotemporal nerve
-lingual nerve
-inferior alveolar nerve
auriculotemporal nerve -
what does it encircle
-encircles middle meningeal artery
auriculotemporal nerve -
what does it supply
-gives off many branches, is largest supply of sensory fibres to auricles temporal region
- sends sensory fibres to TMJ
- passes post synaptic parasympathetic secretomotor fibres to parotid gland (from otic ganglion)
lingual nerve - what does it supply
sensory to anterior 2/3rds of tongue, floor of mouth and lingual gingivae
what joins the lingual nerve in the infratemporal fossa?
chorda tympani nerve (branch of facial nerve)
inferior alveolar nerve - where does it enter and supply
enters mandibular foramen and passes through mandibular canal, supplies lower posterior teeth
inferior alveolar nerve - branches
-nerve to mylohyoid
-mental nerve
nerve to mylohyoid - supply
motor supply to mylohyoid and anterior belly of digastric muscles
mental nerve - supply
mental nerve passes through mental foramen and innervates skin of lower lip, chin, gingiva of lower incisors
3 parts of maxillary artery
-mandibular
-pterygoid
-pterygopalatine
branches of mandibular part of maxillary artery
- middle meningeal artery
- inferior alveolar artery
branches of pterygoid part of maxillary artery
-masseteric artery
-deep temporal branches
-buccal branches
branches of pterygopalatine part of maxillary artery
-descending palatine artery
-infra orbital artery
-3 branches of superior alveolar artery (anterior, middle, posterior)
(posterior most important clinically)
