what do suprahyoid muscles do
raise the hyoid bone when swallowing
what do infrahyoid muscles do
depress or fix hyoid bone and provide attachments of suprahyoid muscles
mylohyoid origin, insertion, action and innnervation
origin: mylohyoid line on mandible
insertion: body of hyoid and fibres of opposite mylohyoid
action: elevates the hyoid and forms the floor of oral cavity
insertion: nerve to mylohyoid CN V3
digastric origin, insertion, action and innnervation
origin: anterior at digastric fossa on mandible, posterior mastoid notch on mastoid process
insertion: attachment of intermediate tendon at hyoid
action: anterior raises hyoid and opens mouth by lowering mandible, posterior elevates and retracts hyoid bone
innervation: anterior nerve to mylohyoid CN V3, posterior CN VII digastric branch
stylohyoid origin, insertion, action and innnervation
origin: styloid process
insertion: body of hyoid
action: pulls hyoid bone upward
innervation: CN VII
geniohyoid origin, insertion, action and innnervation
origin: mandible
insertion: body of hyoid superior to mylohyoid floor of oral cavity
action: fixed mandible - elevates and pulls hyoid forward, fixed hyoid - pulls downward and inward
innervation: anterior ramus of C1run with CN XII
sternohyoid origin, insertion, action and innnervation
origin: sternoclavicular joint
insertion: hyoid medially
action: depresses hyoid after elevation during swallowing
innervation: anterior rami of C1 to C3 through ansa cervicalis
omohyoid origin, insertion, action and innnervation
origin: superior - intermediate tendon, inferior - superior border of scapula
insertion: superior - hyoid laterally, inferior - intermediate tendon
action: depresses and fixes the hyoid
innervation: anterior rami of C1 to C3 through ansa cervicalis
thyrohoid origin, insertion, action and innnervation
origin: thyroid cartilage
insertion: greater horn and adjacent body of hyoid
action: depresses hyoid, can raise larynx when hyoid is fixed
innervation: anterior rami of C1 run with CN XII
sternothyroid origin, insertion, action and innnervation
origin: manubrium
insertion: olbique line of thyroid cartilage
action: draws larynx downward
innervation: anterior rami of C1 to C3 through ansa cervicalis
