Q

outline submandibular ducts

A

approx 5cm long and begin between mylohyoid and hyoglossus
lingual nerve CN V3 loops under duct before it opens into oral cavity
opens into 3 orifices in the oral cavity besides the base of frenulum (sublingual papilla/ caruncles)
blood supply is via submental arteries (branch of facial artery)
venous drainage is via submental veins (to lingual and facial veins)

Q

where does sublingual gland lie

A

in floor of mouth between mandible and hyoglossus lateral to submandibular duct and lingual nerve CN V3. sits in sublingual fossa of mandible. sublingual folds overly the gland smallest of major salivary glands

Q

what are salivary stones

A

pain, swelling and lack of salivation common in submandibular duct due to upwards course into oral cavity
