Study Guide Sheet 2 (pt3) Flashcards
Describe the activity of natural killer cells
Similar to CTL with perforin and granzymes, but does not acquire immune memory after initial exposure to antigen.
Do NK cells require an antigen epitope be presented on a MHC molecule? Why or why not.
No. Does not require antigen epitope be presented on MHC molecule and binds to the Fc of Ig, a process known as Antibody-Dependent Cellular Cytotoxicity (ADCC)
What is the overall role of the humoral immune system?
- Neutralization of toxins – immunoglobulins alter the shape of toxin molecules, thus rendering them ineffective (activity of IgG only)
- Opsonization
Describe the interactions of the cell mediated and humoral immune systems
- Cell mediated is controlled by the TH1-cell which increases CTL’s and phagocytosis
- Humoral immune is controlled by the TH2-cell which increases B-cell activity and Ig’s
Describe the events and speed of the primary response
In primary response, the lag time is slow and the first on the seen are the IgM’s until IgG shows up
Describe the events and speed of the secondary response
In secondary, the memory cells speed up the process of Ig being produced and speeds up lag time
Define active immunity
Receiving the stimulation to the immune system, in which the host lymphocytes develop and become memory cells in the body for years.
Define passive immunity
Helps with defense for short term and does not result in memory cells as the lymphocytes were not made by the body
What is the protein that punches a whole in the cell wall?
Perforin
What is the toxic protease that is inserted into the target cell?
Granzymes
Which Ig is found in mothers milk?
Comes from mothers milk also
When C3b produces C3 - C9, what is this known as?
MAC - Membrane Attack Complex
When the NK cell binds to the Fc of Ig, it is a process known as
Antibody-Dependent Cellular Cytotoxicity (ADCC)
Which is the only Ig that can cause a neutralization of toxins?
IgG
