o Physicians cannot provide the best quality of care when they are not being cared for themselves. Studies have shown that adequate physician wellness increases their likelihood of practicing preventative care. Also, physician’s job satisfaction had a positive effect on patient’s adherence to treatment.
obligations of a student and physician who’s health is compromised
o The physician and the physician’s colleagues have a responsibility to take action to avoid harm to patients, the physician and the medical profession. This requires timely intervention to ensure that the physician ceases practicing-whether temporarily or permanently.

Medical student wellness: A connection of paths; knowledge and action. a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
Burnout
Burnout: Emotional exhaustion (feeling like you have nothing left to give), Depersonalization, Fatigue, Inability to concentrate/sleep
coping styles
coping styles: capture the variety of ways in which individuals try to cope with the demands of the environment.

mental health: psychological state of someone who is functioning at a satisfactory level of emotional and behavioral adjustment
physician impairment
physician impairment: Any physical, mental or behavioral disorder that interferes with ability to engage safely in professional activities.
substance abuse
substance abuse: overindulgence in or dependence on an addictive substance, esp. alcohol or drugs
suicide
suicide: the action of killing oneself intentionally
depression
depression: illness that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest
anxiety
anxiety: a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome
lifestyle
lifestyle: the way in which a person or group lives
