Measuring Health Status Flashcards
Morbidity
the incidence of disease: the rate of sickness. factors that indicate the wellbeing of an individual
Mortality
Death
Incidence
The rate of occurrence of new cases arising in a given period and specified population
Prevalence
The frequency of existing cases in a defined population at a given point.
Crude mortality rate
The death Rate (Number of Deaths during a specified period / Number of persons at risk of dying during the same period)
Age-adjusted mortality
A summary measure of the death rate that a population would have if it had a standard age structure (done to compare separate populations of different age structures, can also be done for other basic characteristics)
Infant mortality
Death rate of children in the first year of life
Health status
The level of health of the individual, group, or population as subjectively assessed by the individual or by more objective measures.
Population health
the health outcomes of a group of individuals, including the distribution of such outcomes within the group
five areas for measuring population health
- – Death
- – Diseasee
- – Disability
- – Discomfort
- – Distress
areas for measuring population health: Death
a. Death: mortality data, life expectancy at birth (Life expectancy varies by age – people who are going to die younger have already died), Hispanic paradox (people who immigrate to the united states are typically healthier, b/c they still have traditional lifestyle qualities in addition to originally being the hardiest from where they came. However, as they are here an increased time, they become more unhealthy because they adopt the American way of life.
areas for measuring population health: Disease
b. Disease: Morbidity, Incident (amount of new cases occurring in a given period) and Prevalence (the amount of cases present / In existence)
areas for measuring population health : Disability
c. Disability: Disability adjusted life years (DALY) = Years of Life Lost (YLL) due to premature mortality in the population + the Years Lost due to Disability (YLD) for people living with the health condition or its consequences
areas for measuring population health : Discomfort
d. Discomfort: Self- Report
areas for measuring population health : Distress
e. Distress: Self-Report
