structures of a coastal zone Flashcards
1
Q
what are the geological structures of a coast?
A
jointing(fractures)
dip(indentations)
faulting(cracks in crust)
folding(overlapping of earths crust)
2
Q
why is geology so important?
A
determine coastal morphology and erosion rates, producing cliff
3
Q
what are concordat coastlines?
A
layers of rock run parallel to the coast, usually the same type of rock so erosion rates are similar along the coast.
Haff and Dalmatian coasts are concordant
4
Q
what is a discordant coastline?
A
bands of rock run perpendicular to the coastline, hard and soft rock so erosion rates are different, creating headlands and bays
