marine erosion Flashcards
what are the two types of waves?
constructive and destructive
what are destructive waves?
created in storm conditions waves are high and dangerous
what are constructive waves?
low waves created in normal conditions l
what are erosional processes influenced by?
wave type
size (wave)
lithology
what is hydraulic action?
waves crash rocks and compress air in cracks, repeated compression widens cracks causing rock to shatter
what is corrosion?
water dissolves minerals from the rocks and washes it away
what is abrasion?
sediment scrapes against the rocks removing small pieces
what is attrition?
sediment collided with each other and break into smaller fragments causing their edges to become rounded
what is a wave cut notch?
erosion occurs at foot of cliff creating a gap within the structure
what is a wave cut platform?
narrow base left behind as cliff retreats
what causes the cave-arch-stack-stump sequence?
hydraulic action and abrasion to the cliff
