sediment transport and deposition Flashcards
what is sediment transformation influenced by?
angle of wave attack
tides
currents
longshore drift
what is longshore drift?
current flowing along the coast taking material with it
what are depositions landforms?
landform formed due to a build up of deposited sediment
what is a beach?
found between high and low water mark, form due to constructive waves depositing sand and shingle
what are spits?
beaches that stick out into the sea, form at sharp bends on coastlines where lsd transports sand and shingle
what are bars?
form when a spit joins two headlands together cutting off the sea usually occurs by lsd.
lagoons can form behind them
what is a tombolo?
spit connected to the mainland
what is a cuspate foreland?
created by longshore drift where sand and shingle deposition extend outward from the shoreline
