Structures and Functions in Living Organisms Flashcards
What are the levels of organisation within organisms?
Smallest to largest
Organelles, cells, tissues, organs and systems
What is the function of the nucleus?
It contains the majority of the cell’s genetic information, stored as chromosomes (made of DNA + proteins)
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
The cytoplasm contains the enzymes for reactions
It also fills the cell, gives it structure and holds the organelles in place
What is the function of the cell membrane?
It protects the cell from its surroundings and it controls what enters and leaves the cell
What is the function of the cell wall?
It strengthens the cell and gives it structure
What is the function of the chloroplasts?
They contain chlorophyll molecules, which convert light energy into sugars using photosynthesis
What is the function of the vacuole?
Stores cell sap to maintain cell rigidity
