Structure of the Earth and the Compositional and Mechanical Layers Flashcards
What is the Lithosphere?
The earth layer that consists of the crust and the upper mantle.
What is the Asthenosphere?
The mantle. Makes up 22-1790 miles of Earth.
What is the makeup of the Outer and Inner Core?
Mostly nickel and iron.
What state is the Outer Core in?
Liquid, kind of like magma.
What state is the Inner Core in?
Solid.
Why is one part of the Core solid and the other liquid?
Different levels of pressure.
What is the Lower Mesosphere?
The lower part of the mantle; it separates the mantle and the Outer Core.
What are the Compositional Layers?
The crust, the mantle, and the core.
What are the Mechanical Layers?
The continental and oceanic crust, the lithosphere, the asthenosphere, the mesosphere, the outer core, and the inner core.
In what layer are the Tectonic Plates?
The lithosphere.
