Structure Of Earth And Its Anatomy Flashcards
Name 4 layers of the earth
Mantle, outer core, crust, inner core
Name the layers starting from the inner most layer
Inner core
Outer core
Mantle
Crust
Name the types of crust
Continental and oceanic
Tell me about the crust
The crust is a solid layer of rock on the surface of the planet. The thickness varies between 3 and 30 miles. There is more oceanic crust than continental.
Tell me about the mantle
The mantle is a semi liquid layer of magma, or molten rock, that moves due to convection currents.
Tell me about the outer core
The liquid part of the core which has a similar composition to the inner core.
Tell me about the inner core
The inner core is the solid part at the centre of the earth. It is made of iron and nickel and can reach temperatures of 5500°C
How many large sections is the crust broken up into?
7 large sections and various smaller sections which are floating on the mantle and moving towards, away from and past eachother.
What are convection currents
When the heat from the inner core tries to escape and boils semi molten rocks in the mantle and slowly moves the crust above it.
What do the conversation currents travel in
Cells
