Fragile Ecosystems Flashcards
What is a fragile ecosystem
Fragile ecosystems are areas that are highly susceptible to disturbance and struggle to recover from changes, whether natural or human-caused. They are characterized by high rates of species turnover and population fluctuations. Examples include deserts, mountains, wetlands, and certain coastal areas.
What are some examples of fragile ecosystems and why
Examples:
• Deserts and semi-arid lands: These areas are prone to desertification and drought.
• Mountains: Vulnerable to climate change, unsustainable development, and disasters.
• Wetlands: Especially vulnerable to human activities like drainage and pollution.
• Small islands: Often have limited resources and unique biodiversity that can be easily threatened.
• Certain coastal areas: Vulnerable to sea-level rise, erosion, and pollution.
How are fragile ecosystems impacted
All fragile environments are impacted by the changes in climate caused by global warming
