Volcanic Hazards Flashcards
Name 6 volcanic hazards
Ash, gas, acid rain, Lahar, pyroclastic flow, lava flow
Ash
The smoke cloud normally seen from an eruption is ash.
Travels for miles and settles as ash fall.
Can provide very fertile soil.
Gas
Volcanoes produce gas when they are erupting.
This includes Co2 , steam and sulphur dioxide.
Volcanic gasses smell of rotten eggs due to the sulfur
Acid rain
The sulfur emissions from volcanoes can cause acid rain.
Dangerous to plant and animal life.
Harm humans.
Lahar
Mudflow from a volcano.
Dangerous energy and speed.
Fluid when moving but solidifies when stopped.
Pyroclastic flow
Floods of gas , lava and rock that rush down the volcano after an eruption.
Hot gasses and high speed make them lethal.
Lava flow.
Created by non explosive eruption.
Consists of molten rock.
Thick and can travel very far before solidifying.
Very destructive but slow moving.
