Plate Boundaries Flashcards
How many types of plate boundaries are there
4
Name all the types of plate boundaries
Constructive, destructive, collision, conservative
Give me a basic description of what happens at a constructive plate boundary
The convection currents go up and out( up and away from eachother) . Sea floor spreading.
Give me a basic description of what happens at a destructive plate boundary
The plates go into eachother and one goes underneath
Give me a basic description of what happens at a collision plate boundary
The plates go straight into eachother and create fold mountains. They collide.
Give me a basic description of what happens at a conservative plate boundary
The plates go smoothly past eachother. They don’t go away or towards eachother.
Give me an example of a constructive plate boundary
North American plate and Eurasian plate.
Give me an example of a destructive plate boundary
Nazca plate and South American plate.
Give me an example of a collision plate boundary
Eurasian plate and Indo-Australian plate
Give me an example of a conservative plate boundary
Pacific plate and North American plate.
What happens at constructive plate boundaries and what is formed?
Sea floor spreading and magma is released and rises it then hardens to form new land (volcanic islands) and creates a mid oceanic ridge.
Earthquakes and volcanoes occur
What happens at a destructive plate boundary and what is formed?
One plate is destroyed.
One plate goes under another into a subduction zone, this forces magma up into the lifted plate creating a volcano. The subduction zone is in the oceanic trench. The friction in the subduction zone creates an earthquake.
What is formed at a collision plate boundary
Fold mountains e.g. Himalayas
Formed out of sedimentary rock.
What is formed at conservative plate boundaries
Eat
Earthquakes due to friction.
Example is sm Andrea’s front line.
